How many families need a place to stay?
At any given time, between two and five families of Ranken Jordan patients need a place to stay. If they can’t afford a hotel room or don’t have family or friends to stay with, right now they simply can’t stay and actively participate in their child’s medical treatment every day. At Ranken Jordan, we believe that a family’s participation in their child’s medical treatment and physical therapy is vital to positive progress. Additionally, many of our children go home needing ongoing outpatient and home therapies and medication regimens that families need training on before leaving Ranken Jordan. This is tough for families who can’t be at the hospital regularly.
What kind of “Home Away From Home” does Ranken Jordan need?
Ideally, we need a six- to eight-family suite (bedroom/private bathroom suite) home with a large common kitchen, living area and laundry facilities for families to share. Having this kind of home within walking distance of Ranken Jordan would take a huge burden off our families, allowing them to stay close to their children, create a home away from home at a time when they desperately need one, and even walk over in the middle of the night to check on their children, as parents of even healthy kids like to do. It would also allow them to take a break during the day and cook a meal, take a bath, or just lay down for a quick nap – typical activities that we all take for granted, but that are amazingly therapeutic for mentally and emotionally exhausted parents.
How much would the home cost to build?
We’ve roughly estimated a cost of between $2 to 4 million.
Can’t Ranken Jordan just raise the money?
Although it is a pressing need, it will be a number of years before Ranken Jordan can even begin raising funds to build housing on our own. As medical advances help save even more very sick and injured children, the demand for our services grows. Our first priority is providing medical care to children regardless of their ability to pay, and ongoing demand is ensuring that all our available funds are going to direct patient care for the foreseeable future.
Getting “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” to build this home is a long shot. What about asking local construction companies/contractors for help?
We would be thrilled to have local or regional construction companies build this “Home Away From Home” for our children and families. If you or someone you know can help, please contact Ranken Jordan President & CEO Lauri Tanner at (314) 872-6400.
I haven’t heard of Ranken Jordan Pediatric Specialty Hospital before – what’s its mission and how is it different from typical pediatric hospitals?
Ranken Jordan – A Pediatric Specialty Hospital is one of only a handful of hospitals in the country that provides 24-hour treatment and rehabilitation care for seriously ill and injured children regardless of their family’s ability to pay. Medical advances are saving more sick and hurt children than ever before, but they often end up needing more complicated, ongoing care. Whether it’s a baby facing complications from prematurity, a child with oxygen/ventilator dependency, or a teen with severe orthopedic injuries, Ranken Jordan helps bridge the gap between traditional hospitals and home care.
But, our care goes well beyond the physical. We understand that a child’s illness or injury isn’t just physical, and it isn’t something that only affects the child. When a child is sick or hurt, the entire family copes with physical, mental, emotional and spiritual challenges – challenges that often devastate families without the kind of help offered by Ranken Jordan.
Through inpatient, outpatient, day treatment and community programs, we give our children and families not only physical therapy, but also counseling, behavioral care and community integration. Our focus is firmly on treating the whole child and family, wrapping them in the medical, emotional and community care they need to return home and rebuild their lives.
